Where to Put Your Unusual Personal Essay TopicsIn the college essay writing process, oddball personal essay topics are not hard to come by. We've all been there - stuck for ideas or on a deadline, and we simply don't have the time to get through a long piece of writing that takes us hours to finish.
This may seem like an easy solution to a problem, but in reality it's really not an option. Having already written enough essays in our lives, we need to find a way to move them from short-form essays to long-form essays, preferably over a period of one semester. That means we need to get out of our comfort zone and consider some unusual personal essay topics. Oddball personal essay topics can be tricky, but when you write something that is unique and isn't normally written about, there is no way you will ever write it again. As a student, you are a bit more likely to get away with writing something unique, because as the teacher you have the authority to call you on your strange opinion or quote you on a weird thing you read. As an instructor, though, it can be hard to keep a straight face when students do this can undermine the entire purpose of having the essay assignment in the first place. Thus, it is best to stick to your guns and not get too creative. Oddball personal essay topics are exactly what they sound like. They are unusual, but not too unusual. So, take the usual topic and make it bizarre. This is a great way to keep the students coming back for more assignments because it gives them something else to talk about. On a group project, for example, some students may have personal views about organized religion. Now, you could be a teacher and want to use a weird theme for a science project. You can ask them to research the subject and come up with the most interesting personal essay topic that they can come up with. Not only will it get them excited to do a more detailed research project, it will make them a better group member because they will not only be looking at the project, but talking about it. Some students might have strange opinions about the world, or about the government or even politics. If this is the case, you could have students write a speech or create an unusual idea and ask them to talk about it for one term. It won't get their point across, but then again, they will be getting excited to talk about it will build their confidence. This is definitely worth the little bit of work you'll have to put into it. Oddball essay topics will get students more excited about their academic writing and this can translate to a better performance in the classroom, so why not give it a try? And, as the students become more confident in their own abilities, you'll see their writing gets better.
